Singleton testifies at murder trial

18.09.2008

ADVERTISING guru John Singleton says he owned a rare green Bentley similar to one owned by Rene Rivkin, whose chauffeur is now on trial for murder.

Gordon Wood, 45, has pleaded not guilty in the NSW Supreme Court to murdering his 24-year-old girlfriend Caroline Byrne, by throwing her off a cliff at The Gap, at Watson`s Bay, in Sydney`s east, on or about June 8, 1995.

A number of witnesses have given evidence that on one afternoon, around June 7, 1995, they saw a green Bentley drive past Watson`s Bay Park.

The jury has been told Mr Wood was then the chauffeur to the late stockbroker Rene Rivkin, who owned a green Bentley in June 1995.

One woman told the court she had seen a "young blond fellow" driving a green Bentley one afternoon at Watsons Bay, adding that he looked similar to Mr Wood.

In very brief evidence today, Mr Singleton told the jury he also owned a two door British racing green Bentley in June 1995.

At that time, he was living at the Swiss Grand Hotel at Bondi Beach, but from time to time drove his Bentley to Camp Cove and one of two alternative routes involved passing by The Gap.

Mr Singleton said he visited his children at Camp Cove either on his way to work or after work, adding that he started work at "8am-ish" and left between 6 to 8pm.

Mr Singleton said he sometimes used a service which provided a person to drive a client home in the client`s car if they were over 0.05.

He said he used the service on ten or twenty occasions over a couple of years.

Crown Prosecutor Mark Tedeschi, QC, asked whether he had ever used that service at 3 o`clock in the afternoon.

"No, I am a bit more moderate than that," he said.

The trial is continuing before Justice Graham Barr.
