`Robin Hood` banker jailed for fraud

18.09.2008

A "ROBIN Hood" bank manager has been jailed for taking money from the accounts of his rich clients and putting it into those of struggling businesses.

Bank of Scotland manager Benedict Hancock, 39,  channelled more than £7million ($16 million) into the accounts of companies in trouble, London`s Daily Telegraph reported.

And, like Robin Hood, Hancock lived in Nottinghamshire.

During the father-of-two`s trial for false accounting, barrister Andrew Lloyd-Eley told the court that his client received no personal gain from the fraud.

"The only explanation he gave was that he wanted the companies to do well. He got on well with them and he wanted to make sure that they succeeded for their sake rather than his," Mr Lloyd Eley was quoted as saying.

"All of Mr Hancock`s customers - and the bank - spoke very highly of him. He was dedicated to his job."

Hancock`s unauthorised loans were discovered in November 2006 when one of his clients discovered that his account was £5 million short.

He was arrested in February 2007 and found guilty of 14 counts of false accounting and one count of abuse of position.

He was sentenced to 18 months in prison at Blackfriars Crown Court in central London on Tuesday.
