JUST three days after it went on sale, copies of The Costello Memoirs have been dumped in the bargain bins.
Staff at the Paperchain Bookstore in Manuka, the closest bookshop to Parliament House, reported "pretty decent" sales yesterday at the full price of $54.99.
But at the Borders in the Canberra Centre shopping mall, The Costello Memoirs had already been discounted down to $34.95 and the book was available at the Big W in the same complex for the bargain basement price of just $32.95.
The manager of Readings Books in Melbourne`s Malvern, a 15-minute stroll around the corner from Costello`s office, was coy about sales figures in the former treasurer`s electorate.
The book there though has been discounted down to $44.95.
Staff at Lesley McKay`s Bookshop in Queen Street, Woollahra, in the heart of Wentworth, the electorate of the man who now holds the job that Costello coveted for so long, Malcolm Turnbull, said sales had been "a bit thin".
By late yesterday afternoon only 15 copies had passed over their counter.
Sales seem to have been slow even up at the top end of town in Costello`s home city of Melbourne.
The Costello Memoirs "weren`t flying out the door" at the Hill of Content Bookshop in Bourke Street, next door to the celebrated restaurant Florentino, beloved of political powerbrokers, staff said.
"It`s on our bestseller list," The Australian was told yesterday, "but it`s not moving quite as quickly as we thought it would."

Instead of investing time in a proper budget which has largely failed to get through the senate, they have wasted time and money with marketing slogans and publicity stunts, like Kyoto, apologies, 2020, new taxes (carbon trading tax, alcopop tax, means tests for family benefits and baby bonus) and Everythingwatch. The first thing Rudd asked Turnbull was not for cooperation on the economy, it was for cooperation with another go at a republic! And last time I checked, the decision to support the USA in the invasion of Iraq was bipartisan...

What a fantastic read. I couldn't put it down. It had me on the edge of my seat in anticipation. I for one can't wait for The Costello Memoirs 2, I want to know how it ends.
