SCIENTISTS have developed a fabric that is stab and flame resistant, but as light to wear as wool.
Dr Peter Ingham of AgResearch, New Zealand, said the fabric could withstand a blowtorch, and had many commercial applications.
He said it would do a good job protecting soldiers from shrapnel and prison wardens from attack.
"It looks like a milled woollen material," he said.
"There have been inquiries from New Zealand Post to prevent puncture wounds from dog bites."
The fabric is made by combining knitted Vectran, an ultra-high strength polymer, with wool fibres.
"We have tested it ... with a screwdriver in two hands and all your force, it won`t go through."
