ARMED police have swooped on a cops and robbers fancy dress party after the costumed criminals were mistaken for the real thing.

Police repsonded after a passer-by reported two armed men, dressed in dark clothes, entering an office in Essex, England.

As police approached with guns drawn they discovered it was only office workers taking part in a team-building exercise and the passser-by had mistaken toy guns for the real weapons, The Daily Mail reports.

Detective Chief Inspector Tim Raymond said: "The two men involved clearly did not think about the implications of their actions.

"This was potentially a very dangerous situation and, as such, armed officers were deployed.

"It was quickly established the guns were imitations, however, the outcome could have been very different."
