Turnbull is the only liberal canditate capable of challenging Rudd effectively. Labor have not delivered anything and are all talk. The Coalition needs to put a strong person in charge - Turnbull is the best, unless Costello wants to comeback! Nelson is hoooopeeeless.....

I don't think Liberal would ever get elected with Turnball as leader. He represents much of the reasons Liberal got shoved last election - rich, arrogant and he seems to have a permanent smirk on his face. If Liberal are looking to identify with 'average working families' then I think Turnball is not the way forward - I'm sure interest rates don't bother him too much. Liberal can't win with Nelson as leader either. He lacks "it". The x-factor. I don't think there are many alternatives unfortunately for them.

Forget Malcolm Turnbull. He is old and boring. What they need are some young, smart blood in the party or they won't stand a chance at the next election. Out with the old and in with the young !!! (Sorry Johnnie, but you were getting a bit too old, even though I thought you were a great pm).

  • Malcolm Turnbull says poll results `not good`
  • Says Brendan Nelson unhappy with underdog status
  • Turnbull won`t rule out a leadership challenge

AMBITIOUS frontbencher Malcolm Turnbull is not ruling out a challenge to Brendan Nelson after a horror week for the federal Opposition Leader.

Dr Nelson`s fledgling Liberal leadership has suffered a series of blows this week, with a record low popularity rating and two opposition MPs moonlighting overseas as consultants to supplement their $127,000 a year backbench salaries.

He is under pressure to convince several former ministers to make decisions on their futures, amid fears the Coalition could lose even more ground if retiring MPs force by-elections in safe seats.

Mr Turnbull said Dr Nelson`s preferred prime minister rating of just 7 per cent was disappointing.

"That`s not a good number, he doesn`t like that," Mr Turnbull said on Channel 7.

"He`s said he`s got locked in underdog status. I know Brendan will work very hard to get out of that underdog status and, you know, become more competitive."

Asked if he was ruling out a challenge, Mr Turnbull said: "I`m not, the only thing I`m ruling out is ever making a comment about the leadership."

"There is nothing I can say that would be helpful or constructive," he said.

Dr Nelson beat Mr Turnbull to the opposition leadership by three votes in a party room ballot last November.
