  • Tape slams cartoons and claims papal involvement
  • Intelligence community analyses audio
  • Agencies say voice is al Quaeda leader`s

The Vatican has rejected claims on an audio tape from Osama bin Laden that the Pope is involved in a "crusade" against Islam.

US intelligence agents believe the voice on the message is bin Laden`s,  the White House says.

The audio message - in which bin Laden accuses Pope Benedict XVI of being deeply involved in a "new crusade" to deride Islam - was addressed to the "intelligent ones" in the European Union.

A voice purported to be bin Laden`s warning Europe of a "reckoning" over cartoons depicting the Prophet Mohammed, and said the drawings were part of "the framework of a new crusade" in which the pope ``has played a large, lengthy role".

The Vatican rejected the accusation.

The charge was "not new or surprising"`, Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi said, dismissing as "totally unfounded the specific accusation" that the Roman Catholic Church backed the publication in Europe on Wednesday of the cartoons.

"The pope and the papal council for inter-religious dialogue have denounced the satirical campaign against Islam on more than one occasion," he said.

The Italian interior ministry - responsible for papal security - will examine the message closely during a meeting Friday of its anti-terrorism unit, the ANSA news agency reported.

Such threats should "be taken seriously into consideration", an anti-terrorism source told ANSA.

White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said it appeared bin Laden was again "attempting to establish himself as relevant and posture himself as the defender of Muslims".

However "at the same time his organisation continues to specifically target and lethally target innocent men and women and children around the world and bring destruction to people everywhere who don`t agree with their radical views", she said.

Separately, a US intelligence officer speaking on condition of anonymity said that "the CIA has analysed it and has a high degree of confidence that it is the voice of bin Laden".

The audio message said that publishing the "insulting drawings" was a greater crime than Western forces targeting Muslim villages and killing women and children.

At least 17 Danish dailies on February 13 reprinted a drawing featuring the Prophet Mohammed`s head with a turban that looked like a bomb with a lit fuse, sparking anger in a number of Muslim countries.

The newspapers decided to republish the caricature a day after police in Denmark foiled a plot to murder the cartoonist.
