THE races aren`t all about the girls.

Fashion writer and all-round style guru Melissa Hoyer tackles the do`s and don`t`s of Spring Racing etiquette and attire so the blokes can scrub up just as good as the ladies.

See the ladies fashion guide.

*** RACE DAY DO’S ***
  • A well-cut suit will get you off to a great start – a two-button jacket and flat front pants look sleek and understated, and then you can start experimenting with colour when it comes to your tie and shirt. But don’t make like a Picasso painting
  • Be daring with your tie and shirt and don’t think they have to match - just co-ordinate nicely
  • Make sure you spend some bucks on good-looking sunnies, preferably with good sun protection and if they have a designer logo on them, why not?
  • Boys should make sure their belts and shoes match – a brown belt and black shoes? I don’t think so
  • Make sure your suit is freshly pressed and not the ill-fitting one you get away with at work every few days
  • Remember to get rid of any stray nasal hairs, have a good shave, dollop a dab of your favourite scent and apply the sunscreen – nothing worse than a burnt face around 4pm
  • Just leave the `yob’ factor at home for a change and make like a gentleman. Leave any wild deeds until home or the pub afterwards
    *** RACE DAY DON’TS ***
  • Boys, boys, avoid the ‘funny` or ‘amusing’ ties or silly socks – they’re just not that funny
  • Light colored shoes should be banished as nothing is smarter than a deeper shade, preferably navy or black (but not grey!)
  • Make sure the collar of your racing shirt isn’t too tight – just go to the expense of buying a brilliant shirt that fits you perfectly
  • And like girls, don’t go the tandoori face tan. A quick slap on the face the night before of a light facial bronzer, or even early the morning of the races, is enough
  • No gelato colored shirts with the old work suit – this is an occasion so treat it accordingly!
  • Make sure you give your shoes a clean like they have never had before - all is revealed in the light of the day!
