RECORD water levels opened the floodgates for a run of broken records on day two of the world`s greatest white water event the Avon Descent
Taking off from Cobbler’s Bay at 7am yesterday, paddlers braved the icy conditions of the last 77km of the 134km event which saw the highest water levels in just over a decade.
First paddlers to cross the line at Riverside Gardens in Bayswater on day two were Todd Coulter and Simon Roll racing in a double kayak with a time of 7.17.34 hours.
Coming in second for the day was single kayak team Clint Pretorius and Ash Nesbit with a time of 7:30.39 hours, smashing the previous record of 8:20.18 hours set in 1996.
The day didn`t bring good news for all the competitors however, with 20 withdrawals at the starting line due to broken crafts, frazzled nerves, numerous fallouts from the Avon Valley to Bell`s Rapids and two cases of hypothermia.
The thrills and spills of the power boating action took off today at noon with father and son team Todd and Ian Williamson crossing the finish line just before 1.30pm with a record time of 2:11.51 over both days.
The winners celebrated their win and expressed their excitement to the crowd.
