Chilly family found on remote road

A FAMILY of four, including two children aged eight and nine months, spent five hours trapped in snow in their car on a remote road in Victoria`s high country.

Police reached the family shortly before 2am (AEST) today, almost five hours after their ordeal began on the Jamieson-Licola Road, Victoria Police Senior Constable Adam West said.

Their car became stuck on a steep grade on the road about 60km from Jamieson, a tiny mountain community near Lake Eildon, about 9.15pm, Snr Constable West said.

It`s believed the four-wheel drive was not fitted with chains but was towing a trailer and encountered 30cm of snow on the lonely road.

The area where the four-wheel drive became stuck is high in the Great Dividing Range and in the vicinity of Mount Skene, a 1570m peak at the top of the divide.

Temperatures at nearby Mt Buller had reached -1 degree Celsius, with snow falling, shortly before police arrived to rescue the family.

"They had enough food and water and clothing for an overnight stay but they have a nine-month-old and an eight-year-old on board," Snr Constable West said.

State Emergency Service and police from Jamieson could not reach the four-wheel drive from the north but police from the Gippsland town of Heyfield arrived from the south approach shortly before 2am, he said.

The family is safe and well and will be taken to Heyfield Police Station.
