POLICE say they are "stupefied`` after a number of drivers had their cars impounded overnight for excessive speed in Victoria.

A police spokesman said a Porsche was impounded in the inner Melbourne suburb of Carlton after allegedly reaching speeds of 154km/h in Lygon Street at 8.30pm (AEST).

The male driver first attracted police attention by driving to the right of a tram stop.

Two other drivers were caught driving in suburban streets in the south-eastern suburb of Bentleigh East at alleged speeds of up to 140km/h just after 9pm.

The drivers, a 27-year-old from Clayton South and an 18-year-old from Cheltenham have been interviewed for driving at a speed dangerous.

All the cars were impounded.

Over 5000 drivers have had their vehicles impounded due to reckless and stupid behaviour since "hoon`` legislation was introduced a year ago.
