Police smash major drug syndicate

16.07.2008

POLICE believe they have busted a major drug syndicate in Melbourne`s northern suburbs with the arrest of four men this morning.

Drug Taskforce detectives swooped on addresses in Glenroy, Greenvale, Thomastown and Somerton as part of the culmination of a five-month investigation into the distribution of high quality methamphetamine.

Four men - a 45-year-old from Glenroy, a 48-year-old from Greenvale and two 34-year-olds from NSW - are being interviewed by police at their St Kilda Road complex.

Police expect to charge them with trafficking a large commercial quantity drug of dependence.

Two luxury vehicles, a Mercedes-Benz and a Harley-Davidson motorcycle, along with property and large amounts of cash have been seized.

The arrests are believed to be linked to two large seizures of ice in Wodonga earlier this year, investigators say.

Drug Taskforce head Detective Inspector Doug Fryer said police were pleased to have ended a trafficking network supplying illicit drugs throughout Victoria.

"This has been a successful operation which has shut down a well organised syndicate operating out of the northern suburbs," Det Insp Fryer said.

"The health ramifications of the use of ice are significant and the Drug Taskforce will continue to target other high level syndicates to minimise the distribution of illicit drugs."
