COMPANY gross operating profits, in current prices, rose 2.2 per cent in the March quarter, seasonally adjusted, to be up 7.0 per cent over the year, the Australian Bureau of Statistics said. Economists were expecting gross operating profits to rise by 1.0 per cent in the quarter.

Estimated business inventories, in seasonally adjusted chain volume terms, rose 0.9 per cent in the March quarter after rising 0.8 per cent in the previous quarter.

The March quarter result was 3.6 per cent higher than a year ago.

Economists were expecting a 1.0 per cent rise in the quarter.

The estimate of income from sales by manufacturers in the March quarter, in seasonally adjusted chain volume measures, was up 0.7 per cent.

Estimated income from sales by wholesalers in the March quarter in adjusted chain volumes measures fell 0.5 per cent.
