`100 killed since Zimbabwe election`

5.07.2008

ZIMBABWE`s opposition said today post-election violence has claimed the lives of 103 of its supporters, and about 5000 are missing after being abducted by President Robert Mugabe`s ruling party.

Movement for Democratic Change spokesman Nelson Chamisa said in a statement that about 1500 of the opposition party`s activists are in police custody charged with political violence.

"The arrests come at a time when 103 supporters have been murdered by ZANU-PF supporters but not a single ZANU-PF supporter has been arrested," read the statement.

The previous death toll stood at around 90.

"About 5000 of our supporters, mainly polling agents and council candidates, are still missing after having been abducted by ZANU-PF militia and State security agents in unmarked vehicles."

The MDC says its members have become the victim of a crackdown since the party won a parliamentary majority in March 29 elections, later pulling out of a presidential run-off vote on June 27 due to violence against its supporters.

As the international community urges peace talks between MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai and Robert Mugabe - who won the one-man vote denounced as a sham - Mr Chamisa said the ongoing violence made dialogue impossible.

The MDC has said the cessation of violence is one of its pre-conditions for unity talks to take place.

"The continued onslaught of our structures shows that ZANU-PF is not sincere in the so-called dialogue it says it wants with the MDC. The regime cannot talk dialogue when it is acting war across the length and breadth of the country
